MSC Vehicle Speed Sensors Applications

 

Accessories
     Nearly all aftermarket accessories that utilize vehicle speed data are programmable for a wide variety of signal sources and pulse rates. This is to accommodate the 4 and 8 pulse VSS signals from earlier EFI engines, as well as the much more frequent signals generated by later vehicles with ABS.
   However, most electronic speedometers and cruise control units are optimized for a specific rate for better performance.

     When doing an engine or fuel injection exchange it is always hard to know what the actual specifications of the donor motor are for certain, especially for EFI applications, since most come from used cars or junk yards.
     These Applications Guides were compiled for your convenience and should be considered as only a starting point. The transition to electronic fuel injection, and then again to ABS, each spanned several model years. Exact dates were difficult to pin down, therefore there may be some inaccuracies. NOTICE: Before ordering a Vehicle Speed Sensor you should verify your specific output signal and input drive requirements. In accordance with industry standards, electronic parts are not returnable after they have been installed.

Installation Tips
     Ford Transmission. Using a VSS and a mechanical speedometer it will be necessary to either use a Ford Plug Type Sensor and obtain a new speedometer cable with a 7/8-18 input end, or have your cable split at a convenient place and have 7/8-18 ends installed, then use a 7/8-18 VSS.
     Cable-driven Cruise Control. If you are installing a VSS and want to retain your cable-driven cruise control it may be simpler or more convenient to intstall the VSS at the cruise control transducer.

Drive Ratio Changes
     Significant changes in final drive ratio, such as: larger or smaller tires, rear end gear ratio change, or mismatched ECM and transmission combination (European/American or vice-versa) could cause poor electronic fuel injection performance due to improper signal.
     Correction may require a visit to a speedometer shop for calibration with either a drive gear change or a ratio adaptor. Ratio test information and correction parts are available at Speedometershop.com.
